More usable and rentable

The halls of Ahoy Rotterdam were built around 1970 based on a structural design by ABT. The renovation was completed in 2018. This project included a limited expansion, strengthening the roof structure of one of the halls, and removing the intermediate levels between the halls and the former restaurant. As a result, the halls are more usable and therefore rentable, and it is possible to apply larger roof loads in the reinforced hall.

Expansion with conference Center

In addition to the existing halls, the new conference center was opened in 2020. It consists of a large hall for 7,000 standing people and 2,800 seated audience members. Due to its excellent sound insulation, the hall can be used for music events as a flat-floor hall, but thanks to the retractable stands, it also serves as a plenary hall for conferences. The expansion also includes various breakout rooms with capacities ranging from 50 to 1,000 people, dressing rooms, offices, a loading area, and a new restaurant. The entrance to the Ahoy complex has also been renovated.

Extensive involvement

The structural design is characterized by large spans, made possible with steel trusses, large cantilevered balconies, and where necessary, executed with expansion joints and acoustic decoupling to limit sound transmission. ABT has been involved from the preliminary design through to execution. During the execution phase, we carried out the engineering in close collaboration with the contractor and also played a role in quality control, inspection of auxiliary work, and the development of architectural structures, such as auxiliary steel for facades and theater technical installations.
