“Many challenges can't be solved by stacking mono-disciplinary solutions.”

Introduction

My name is Richard Claessen, and I have been working at ABT since 2014, currently as a building physics and installations manager . I always greatly enjoy a well-designed building: a building that works for its user, where architecture and technology go hand in hand. At ABT, I can contribute to such buildings. For me, ABT represents the pinnacle of integrated working and deep technical knowledge.

What I do at ABT

As a building physics and installations manager, I think and design comfortable, safe, and sustainable buildings. I look at the design challenge with an integrated perspective. Challenges in the areas of health, energy transition, climate adaptation, etc., cannot be solved with, or by stacking, mono-disciplinary solutions. I am also part of the core team of the Building Physics, Acoustics, and Fire Safety knowledge group.

My dream for the future

I would like to see us make more use of the possibilities that advanced physical simulations offer us, to make our buildings and areas even more comfortable and sustainable. Additionally, I hope to see more projects where climate control is (partially) achieved through passive and low-tech techniques.

Amsterdam Court

Amsterdam Court

The new court in Amsterdam merges three worlds, which at the same time are to operate strictly separated: the judiciary, the detainees and the visitors. As partner of consortium NACH (New Amsterdam Court House), ABT signed on to design, build, finance, maintain and operate this imposing building on Parnassusweg in Amsterdam. It takes partnership to build an icon!

Oostpoort Kavel 1F

Oostpoort Kavel 1F

In Haarlem, the first social residential tower with a hybrid construction of wood and concrete will soon be built. This 33-meter-high tower, provisionally named Oostpoort Kavel 1F, will contain 100 apartments and is being realized on behalf of the housing corporation Ymere. ABT is providing the building physics, acoustic, fire safety, and sustainability advice for this project.

Houtlab Nieuwkuijk

Houtlab Nieuwkuijk

Houtlab is a wooden building with a Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) load-bearing structure, located along the A59. It is a sustainable, circular, and inspiring production and office space where collaboration is key. Our sister company, Adviesbureau Lüning, was responsible for the construction design. ABT provided the building physics, acoustics, fire safety, and installation engineering consultancy.

Revitalization of the Valkhof Museum

Revitalization of the Valkhof Museum

The Valkhof Museum in Nijmegen is being renovated. The building and the presentations of the collections will receive a future-proof and contemporary look. Many parts of the building require technical interventions due to changes in use, comfort, and security. ABT, working as an integral technical advisor, is closely collaborating with architect UNStudio on the design of the new museum.
