Introduction

I am Stephan Toonen and I have been working at ABT since 1994. Always with the same employer boring? Certainly not. At ABT, I have had and still have the freedom to choose where my passion lies. This has allowed me to work on fantastic projects and in various roles. Starting from structural advice as a basis, later also in other disciplines. It always remains special to start with a blank sheet of paper and see it built in reality after a design phase. Once the building, parking garage, tunnel, bridge, or wind turbine is in use, it gives me a good feeling that we have contributed to it.

What I do at ABT

Within ABT, I fulfill the role of consultant in a variety of roles and projects. Through my experiences over the years with high-rise buildings, parking garages above and below ground, building in city centers, tunnels, bridges, existing buildings, and foundations for wind turbines, I am well-versed in many areas. Since I started as a junior at ABT, I have filled my backpack with knowledge in various disciplines over the years. Therefore, you can approach me for many issues, particularly the types of projects mentioned above.

My dream for the future

My vision for our field is that sustainability in projects is and will remain essential. For me, the focus will be on using the right building materials sparingly. After all, the best sustainability measure is to use no or less material. In this context, I would also like to mention my role as an consultant at the ABT subsidiary WINDBASE where many things come together for me. Together with dedicated colleagues, we develop innovative and ingenious foundations for wind turbines worldwide, making a difference for our clients. Realizing projects that matter.

The headquarters of Rabobank in Utrecht has undergone extensive renovation and sustainability improvements. Originally, the building consisted of two practically independent towers that were to be connected only by a few walkways. From a structural point of view, this proved to be impractical. In both towers, a lot of space would be lost to the necessary additional stabilizing elements.

Museum aan de Stroom

The surprising design by Neutelings Riedijk Architects consists of a stack of 10 concrete boxes, each rotated a quarter turn relative to the one below. The space outside the boxes functions as a public gallery, offering a unique and constantly changing view over Antwerp and leading to a rooftop restaurant. Columns or other structural elements were not allowed to obstruct the view or the illusion of the floating boxes.

Revitalization of the Valkhof Museum

The Valkhof Museum in Nijmegen is being renovated. The building and the presentations of the collections will receive a future-proof and contemporary look. Many parts of the building require technical interventions due to changes in use, comfort, and security. ABT, working as an integral technical advisor, is closely collaborating with architect UNStudio on the design of the new museum.
