“My focus is on understanding and applying physical processes at all scales that influence the thermal and hygric behavior of buildings.”

Introduction

I am Willem van der Spoel. My fascination with the physics of the living environment has shaped me into a professional with a passion for understanding and applying physical processes in the areas of heat, air, and moisture transfer. After studying technical physics at TU Eindhoven and completing a PhD at KVI in Groningen on radon gas in buildings, I started an academic career as a lecturer at TU Eindhoven and TU Delft. For the past fifteen years, I have applied my knowledge as a building physics consultant at various engineering firms.

What I do at ABT

At ABT, everything revolves around the integration of technical disciplines, and I appreciate the equal and appreciative collaboration between different fields. My focus is on understanding and applying physical processes at all scales that influence the thermal and hygric behavior of buildings. My strength lies in using this knowledge in practical measurements and computer simulations. I have a special interest in robust techniques for building climate control and innovative energy generation concepts. Currently, I work at ABT and part-time at the Faculty of Architecture at TU Delft.

My dream for the future

My dream for the future is to continue contributing to the sustainability and livability of the built environment at the highest level in the Netherlands. I want to keep using my knowledge for innovative energy generation concepts and robust techniques for building climate control. Through equality and collaboration in multidisciplinary teams, I strive to provide optimal advice for our clients. My ambition is to achieve greater user satisfaction and more energy-efficient buildings, and to develop new equality methods in the context of energy performance calculations for buildings.
