Seismic assessment and strengthening of Dutch heritage churches with masonry vaults

At the IABSE Congress Ghent 2025, Han Krijgsman presents the innovative approach to reinforcing historical churches in Groningen, which face seismic risks due to gas extraction.

Since 2014, Groningen has officially been designated a seismic risk area. Of the 54 vulnerable churches, fifteen have been identified as particularly at risk due to their diverse masonry vaults.

Since 2017, ABT and Studio Calvi have been exploring ways to reinforce historic churches while preserving their monumental value. To analyse structural behaviour, non-linear time history models are used, with a simplified mesoscale modelling strategy implemented in the Extreme Loading for Structures (ELS) software, based on the Applied Element Method.

The proposed reinforcement measures aim to balance safety, liveability, and cultural heritage. These include ties at vault intrados, steel frames, and reinforcement coatings with FRCM. Combinations of these measures may also be applied, depending on the specific vulnerabilities of each structure.

Addressing these vulnerabilities will help ensure the preservation of the churches for future generations. Implementation of the reinforcement measures is planned for 2025 and 2026.

With this presentation, Han Krijgsman contributes to the exchange of knowledge and experience on preserving cultural heritage in earthquake-prone regions.
