Amphia Hospital

The Amphia Hospital in Breda received the key to the new building location at Molengracht in 2021. ABT advised on the construction, foundation, and excavation, and monitored the structural construction costs.

Expertises

The main goal was to have everything in one location. Two old hospital locations were replaced by a new building that was placed directly next to another existing location. A 250-meter-long tunnel was then constructed to connect the old and new buildings.

The clear layout consists of four large building blocks that, along with the entrance and the restaurant, are situated along a central passage. Three blocks provide space for outpatient clinics and nursing wards, while the fourth block is designated for the intervention center. The technical installations are housed in the rooftop structures.

Vibration-free piling system

The facade is constructed with load-bearing facade elements. The number of basic elements could be limited by paying close attention to repetition. By constructing the floors as wide slab floors with thickened heads, sufficient space was created for the installations. For the tunnel, an excavation pit was designed with sheet pile walls and gel injection. A vibration-free piling system near the hospital minimized the disturbance from vibrations and noise. ABT calculated the distance from which a driven system could be applied.

Structural construction costs

To monitor the structural construction costs, ABT built a BIM model and linked it to the well-known NL-SfB element method. This made it possible to gain real-time insight into and control over the costs: changes in the design are immediately reflected in the cost overview.

Amphia ready for the future!

In the new hospital, the patient naturally comes first. Therefore, there are 572 single rooms, each with its own bathroom, providing a lot of privacy, peace, and comfort. This also improves hygiene, leading to better infection prevention. Another advantage is that departments that are related to each other are now closer together, which is also more convenient for the patients themselves. Additionally, there is a focus on sustainable operations. A thermal energy storage system has been installed, reducing CO2 emissions by as much as 80 percent. In short, the Amphia Hospital is ready for the future!
