Upgrade
Rijnstate Hospital was built in the early 1990s. For some time, there has been a need for a new entrance that would both modernize the appearance of the hospital and improve its functionality. With the high wooden canopy and the transparent glass facade, an inviting space has been created with a light and open appearance.
Constructie
The wooden canopy is constructed from columns, laminated beams, and a CLT roof slab. Only 8 columns have been used. The 1-meter-high laminated beams span in two directions between the columns. The canopy cantilevers on all sides relative to the columns, which presented challenges for the intersecting connections. Consultancy firm Lüning found an adequate solution for this. The elegantly designed columns are made up of two halves that are interconnected. The entire structure is attached to concrete footings using steel plates, with foundations on steel. Stability is achieved by connecting the canopy to the existing building at the level of the second-floor slab.
Under part of the canopy, the entrance building has been constructed, consisting of a concrete floor and glass facades with glass support fins. These support fins connect to the beams of the canopy at the top. The concrete floor is partly new and partly existing. The glass fins are embedded in the floor, including in the existing part.
Sustainable entrance building for Rijnstate Hospital
The new entrance is made as much as possible from local wood sourced from the forests managed by Staatsbosbeheer around Arnhem. This larch wood gives the entrance a sustainable appearance that aligns with the hospital’s ambition for large-scale sustainability of the entire building. Solar panels have also been installed on the roof of the canopy. The wooden canopy also forms a link to the wooded surroundings of Arnhem, giving visitors a warm and familiar welcome.”
