Extensive renovation
The extensive renovation of Building Ca involved completely replacing the building’s technology and adapting it to accommodate various new functions. These included emergency rooms, End User Services, staff areas, (police) mortuary, quiet rooms, medical technology, nuclear medicine, PET-MRI, and supporting functions such as storage and utilities.
Various challenges
It was known in advance that maintaining and ensuring the continued operation of the existing departments would be a significant challenge. For instance, downtime of the bed linen laundry center, textile distribution, and the medical emergency room (MER) was impossible. Additionally, several matters required extra attention. These included positioning wastewater drains for the Nuclear Medicine department, installing a central emergency power supply of 9 MVA, vertically transporting a 3,000 kg heavy transformer, and hoisting the PET-MRI machine into the building.
Phased renovation
The renovation was carried out in phases. There was a “rolling location” on a very tight construction site, where old building parts had to be demolished first before the facade could be renovated and walkways could be removed. The demolition also included asbestos removal. By dividing the execution into multiple construction streams with their own implementation organization, an efficient approach to the project was achieved.
Transformation
Thanks to the renovation, the building transformed into a compact, efficient, and integrated hospital. The design by INBO architects, Huygen Installatieadvies, and ABT can be considered innovative and sustainable in various ways. It was designed with the goal of creating a healing environment.
