Revitalization of the Valkhof Museum

The Valkhof Museum in Nijmegen is being renovated. The building and the presentations of the collections will receive a future-proof and contemporary look. Many parts of the building require technical interventions due to changes in use, comfort, and security. ABT, working as an integral technical advisor, is closely collaborating with architect UNStudio on the design of the new museum.

Renewed collaboration

UNStudio and ABT were also partners in the construction of the museum in 1997, designed by Ben van Berkel. At that time, ABT designed the challenging structures. Now, the museum is being made more accessible, and the facade, entrance, and interior are being renovated.

Integral design

Project leader Stephan Toonen: ‘After more than 20 years, you see the necessary shortcomings, which often affect multiple disciplines. It’s not just about replacing the technical installations; adjustments are also necessary due to other functions, safety and security, and for the sake of sustainability. With our integral approach, we have sought the most optimal solution.’ A large part of the integral advice is provided by ABT on behalf of UNStudio. This includes advice on structures, building physics, acoustics, fire safety and construction costs, and writing specification articles.

Sustainable facade

ABT has also provided advice on the repair of defects and a high-quality sustainability upgrade of the existing facade. This upgrade stems from building physics requirements and is closely linked to the adjustments and replacement of existing installations. By combining and implementing measures at the same time as large-scale renovation work, maximum results with minimal impact are achieved.

According to the current schedule, the year 2024 will be used for interior adjustments and furnishing. The public will be able to visit Het Valkhof again in early 2025.
