Introduction

My name is Frank Hofmans and I work as a consultant at ABT. After studying structural engineering, I started working directly at ABT in 2004. I focus entirely on consulting around existing buildings. I love to spar from different perspectives early on and give direction on the opportunities and possibilities of existing unique buildings. Especially listed building and monuments are challenging. Important to me are a good integral team, respectful cooperation, room for creativity, thorough research and careful analysis.

What do I do at ABT

In the role as a project manager or design leader, I am involved in many different projects. Existing construction projects usually start off with a feasibility study, which develops into a design and then implementation process.

In addition to this role, I spent ten years on the MT of the knowledge group Engineering  I also fulfilled the role of manager. In recent years, I have begun to focus more on projects again. In addition, I co-facilitate the knowledge group Existing Buildings.

My dream for the future

Effective immediately, we need to start developing our (existing) buildings to be adaptive, circular and climate-positive. This requires knowledge of technology and processes, use of smart methods, creativity and design power. I know that it requires integral (chain) cooperation and knowledge sharing.

Reusing buildings, or parts of them, instead of demolition and new construction, is a huge step in reducing the waste stream and the environmental impact. Fortunately, this realization is permeating the market. It is to ensure that responsibly future-proofing of existing buildings will go without saying or will at least be carefully considered. I am happy to dedicate myself and my years of experience to this aim.

The article “Reusing existing buildings more urgent than ever,” explains my views on this topic.
