Concrete innovations at Prologis warehouses

To drastically reduce the environmental impact of buildings, innovation in concrete is essential. At the Prologis warehouses in Tilburg and Waalwijk, ABT has been involved as a concrete specialist, and we have realized high-quality floors incorporating sustainable concrete innovations. Currently, we are preparing projects for Prologis that involve shrinkage-reducing technology and geopolymer concrete.

From flooring expertise to sustainable concrete innovations at Prologis

Prologis is a globally renowned provider of high-quality storage and distribution centers. In the Benelux region, the originally American company also develops, leases, and manages a range of logistics buildings. ABT advises Prologis on the acquisition processes of existing commercial properties. We have translated our flooring expertise into a comprehensive package of advisory products. This includes advice on existing buildings, new construction, and maintenance, as well as sustainability consulting aimed at future projects with less impact.

Test with circular floor section

In the summer of 2021, during the construction of the warehouse floors at warehouse DC5 in Tilburg, we applied circular concrete to one floor section as a test. Concrete supplier A. Jansen provided concrete in which gravel and sand from asphalt recycling were processed. As a result, the concrete consists of approximately two-thirds secondary raw materials. Twintec poured the floor section and finished it flat. A slightly thicker wear layer was applied during finishing to adequately cover any contaminants in the concrete.

Strong and flat floor

A month after pouring the floor, it was already known that the strength and flatness of the recycled floor were equivalent to the other sections. After more than six months, the floor was inspected by ABT, and the wear resistance of the floor was measured by Buro Vloeradvies. The surface quality of the floor with recycled material is equivalent to the high quality of the other floors, with limited crazing and hairline cracks, good scratch resistance, and high wear resistance.

Reducing environmental impact

Improving the circularity of concrete for monolithic floors aligns with the goals of the Concrete Agreement and the ambition of Prologis and ABT to create increasingly sustainable warehouses, thereby significantly reducing their environmental impact. In the future, we will continue to advise Prologis on the purchase and modification of their properties.
