Hof in de Egelantier

The Rijksmonument Hof in de Egelantier in Haarlem is getting a new lease on life as a boutique hotel and cultural venue. ABT is providing advice on building physics, acoustics, fire safety, and sustainability. The project is a challenging mix of appreciating historical features, designing careful interventions, and the ambition to achieve an A+ sustainability rating.

Custom Advice

The building must meet the highest safety and comfort standards as a hotel. The construction of floors and facades varies greatly throughout the building. ABT provided custom advice on building physics, fire safety, and acoustics during the Preliminary Design (VO) and Final Design (DO) phases. The cultural functions also present an acoustic challenge due to the surrounding residential areas. The design team took an integrated approach to the interventions in the building. The Preliminary Design was completed in February 2022, and the Final Design was finished in December 2022.

Preserving historical value

The decision has been made. The Rijksmonument Hof in de Egelantier in Haarlem is getting a new lease on life. Until the 1970s, the building housed the St. Elisabeth hospital. Since then, it has been used as a cultural center. Over the centuries, the building has been renovated and expanded in various ways. The remaining regents’ and regentesses’ rooms are highly monumental and will be preserved as much as possible. On the other hand, the building offers the possibility of a rooftop extension with high-quality, modern hotel rooms.

Sustainable Future

The building will undergo significant sustainability improvements. Measures such as additional insulation, glass replacement, an aquifer thermal energy storage (ATES) system, and PV panels will lead to an A+ energy label. Additionally, the monument will receive a beautiful new purpose, hopefully fulfilling a central role in the city for many decades to come.
