Historic building
The iconic post office had been vacant for over a decade but is now finally getting a new purpose as a five-star hotel with two publicly accessible central halls featuring shops, bars, and restaurants. Thanks to the 150-meter-high residential tower – which will be added above the courtyard on the east side – the project will also secure a place in the city’s distinctive skyline. ABT is working as the ‘architect of record’ in close collaboration with the designers from the American architectural firm ODA, providing advice on building physics and fire safety.
Respect for history
An important principle in the redevelopment was the desire to use the post office as a vibrant new center, while simultaneously respecting and understanding the building’s unique history. This is clearly visible in the impressive central hall. A publicly accessible and covered square will also be created at Rodezand. This square will be formed by constructing an 18-meter-high concrete foundation table with large columns and a curved ceiling on the old courtyard. The residential tower will be built on top of this. The monumental entrance on Coolsingel will be restored, and terraces will be added in front of POST. A new entrance will be created on Meent.
Living in the POST Tower
The residential tower will feature over 300 owner-occupied and rental apartments, with sizes ranging from 44 m² to 99 m². Each apartment will have a spacious balcony and a beautiful view of the city. Additionally, all residents will have access to the rooftop terrace that will be created on top of the monument.
All in all, Rotterdam has gained another beautiful icon with POST.
