Educational buildings

First and foremost, a school or university building is to provide an environment that supports people, young or old, in their learning process. For this reason, the building must have adequate daylight and good ventilation. In addition, safety is important. Also, universities and colleges want housing that stands out in an international education market.

We use our extensive knowledge and expertise to support educational organizations in realizing or renovating new or existing housing. In addition to designing energy-efficient and sustainable housing, ABT can assist educational organizations when it comes to project management, concept developments and the realization of specific facilities such as laboratories.

Sustainable educational buildings

Educational buildings must have 95% less CO2 emissions by 2050 compared to 1990. ABT helps institutions reduce their building-related energy consumption through a combination of energy conservation and increased use of renewable energy sources, including solar panels, district heating and heat pumps.

Projects

The Earth Simulation Lab (ESL) is a great example of a circular education building. It’s in a former laboratory, which has been completely stripped down. ABT was responsible for the design. With the BREEAM Excellent label, the ESL is ready for the future! Some new construction projects cannot be assessed with the existing BREEAM label. Then customization is required which we call a Bespoke route. This was the case at the Bèta Campus, the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences in Leiden, due to the specific requirements of the laboratories and other matters. The project received a BREEAM very-good certificate.

Wisperweide

Wisperweide

A design that fulfills exceptionally high sustainability ambitions. This is the newly to be developed Wisperweide in Weesp, the first school to be realized within the Innovation Partnership School Buildings Amsterdam. The school building is Paris Proof, detachable, and biobased. It is an example of the circular ambitions of the municipality of Amsterdam. ABT was closely involved in the development of the applied HoutKern Construction Method.

Transformation Earth Simulation Lab (ESL)

Transformation Earth Simulation Lab (ESL)

ABT was involved in the unique transformation of the Earth Simulation Lab (ESL). Designed by the ABT & Barcode Architects team, the ESL, part of the Faculty of Geosciences at Utrecht University, represents a large-scale renovation of the Robert J. van de Graaff Laboratory at Utrecht Science Park. The building brings together previously dispersed research groups from the faculty into a single location.
