Introduction

My name is Mart Jan Cuperus, and I am an ABT professional with a background in structural engineering. I started at ABT as an intern from HAN University of Applied Sciences in 2023. Choosing ABT turned out to be a great decision; I stayed on as a working student and then as a graduation intern, before eventually joining the company as a permanent employee. I am currently pursuing a part-time Master’s degree in Structural Engineering at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, where I am working on my Master’s thesis.

What I do at ABT

My key qualities are: driven, enterprising, eager to learn and a team player. I apply these qualities to a variety of projects. Driven by my passion for design and development, I focus on the structural design of buildings and the development of innovations in the fields of sustainability and computational design. Leading projects I have had the privilege of working on include the new Terminal South, the P-3 car park at Schiphol and the refurbishment of the Ogterop Theatre in Meppel.

My dream for the future

My aim is to create a sustainable, innovative and, above all, safe environment where everyone feels at home and which will last for generations to come. By reflecting on our work and constantly striving for improvement, every project or innovation will be an improved version of the last. Not just for ourselves, but also for our clients and for the planet.

Redevelopment of Schouwburg Ogterop

The redevelopment of Schouwburg Ogterop in Meppel marks a milestone in circular construction. Here, sustainability is seamlessly integrated with structural innovation. Through close collaboration between architects and structural engineers, a high‑quality circular theatre is being created, in which 40% of the materials are reused, 40% are biobased, and 80% of the components are designed for disassembly.

In 2017, Schiphol presented the question of what a new terminal, fully integrated into the existing airport, could look like. The 'One Terminal concept' was the central idea; the airport not as a collection of more or less stand-alone terminals, but as a compact unit housing all facilities under one roof. The design is to contribute to a good travel experience, an excellent travel process, sustainability and is future-proof.

St Jansdal Hospital has a long development history, during which ABT has been involved as lead structural engineer and geotechnical consultant since the original construction in 1986. After approximately twenty years of intensive use, the need arose for targeted renewal. This led to a master plan that builds upon the existing structure and, through flexibility and future-proof design, accommodates growth.
