Dyke reinforcement Sterke Lekdijk

The northern Lekdijk is one of the most important river dykes in the Netherlands, protecting much of the central and western Netherlands. The dyke no longer meets current standards and needs to be reinforced along a 55-kilometre stretch from Amerongen to Schoonhoven.

District Water Control Board De Stichtse Rijnlanden is in charge of the dyke. Their ambition is to ensure that the dyke fits in well with the landscape and its surroundings. Where possible, opportunities for developing (river) nature, recreation, cultural history and mobility are exploited together with area partners. Simply raising and widening the dyke is therefore not an option, innovative solutions are needed. Spearheads of the Water Board are sustainability and emission-free construction. For this reason, they chose the European tendering form the Innovation Partnership, funded by the High Water Protection Programme (HWBP), in 2019.

On August 26, 2020, three innovation partners together with the district water board De Stichtse Rijnlanden signed the cooperation agreement for project Sterke Lekdijk: Mourik Infra, Van Oord Nederland B.V. and the Lekensemble (combination Heijmans Infra B.V. – GMB Civiel B.V. – de Vries en van de Wiel B.V.). The cooperation agreement with Mourik Infra has a term of eight years.

Mourik Infra B.V. asked ABT to further develop the innovations in order to jointly design new solutions for dike reinforcement Sterke Lekdijk. We have been doing this from 2020 for sub-project Salmsteke and since 2022 also for sub-project Salmsteke- Schoonhoven.
