"Dike reinforcements are becoming increasingly complex. Designing a dike (improvement) has therefore long since ceased to be only a technical task. Transparency to stakeholders in the approach to design is important."

Introduction

I specialize in dike reinforcements with longitudinal structures and the development and implementation of innovative dike reinforcements. After studying hydraulic engineering at Delft University of Technology, I started working at Antea Group. Here, in addition to hydraulic engineering, I developed further in geotechnical engineering. I worked at Antea Group for eight years and have been with ABT for over three years.

What I do at ABT

In addition to my position as senior water safety consultant, I am a design leader and project manager on dike strengthening projects. Here I apply my technical expertise directly as a consultant in dike reinforcement projects or indirectly in management as a design leader. I get energy from the alternation between being directly involved in substantive design and managing a team on a dike reinforcement project.

Clients can call me to establish and direct or supervise complex dike reinforcements and developments (knowledge developments and innovations) within water safety.

My dream for the future

Dike reinforcements are becoming increasingly complex. The various functions of a dike are increasing and with them the demands placed on a dike. Designing a dike (improvement) has therefore long since ceased to be only a technical task. I enjoy making a technical design of a dike taking into account all the stakeholders and interests at play on and around the dike. Transparency in the approach to design and a common interest in reducing the design effort is important. A dike reinforcement project can be accelerated without sacrificing quality. Therefore, my strength lies in making the connection between the content and colleagues, project colleagues, clients and stakeholders within a dike reinforcement project. Translating technology into a language that can be adopted by others.

Dijkversterking Heel en Beesel - bentonietmatten

Dyke reinforcement Heel and Beesel

Dyke reinforcement Heel and Beesel

ABT is one of the leading engineering firms when it comes to structurally reinforced dykes. The Heel and Beesel dyke reinforcement project uses heave and stability screens to strengthen the dyke for the next 50 years.

Dyke reinforcement Sterke Lekdijk

Dyke reinforcement Sterke Lekdijk

The northern Lekdijk is one of the most important river dykes in the Netherlands, protecting much of the central and western Netherlands. The dyke no longer meets current standards and needs to be reinforced along a 55-kilometre stretch from Amerongen to Schoonhoven.

Dyke reinforcement Sterke Lekdijk – sub-section Salmsteke – Schoonhoven

Together with Mourik and RPS, ABT is working on this subproject. When we got on board after being awarded the contract, the plan execution phase of subproject Salmsteke, the first of the six subprojects, had already started. In subproject Salmsteke - Schoonhovenseveer we will complete the whole plan execution phase.

Dike reinforcement City of Tiel

Dike reinforcement City of Tiel

A puzzle of piles, anchors, and forces! This is how you can describe the sheet pile wall construction of section 3B (DT3B) in the City of Tiel. To better protect the city of Tiel against high water, the dike between the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal and the Inundation Canal is being structurally reinforced. On behalf of FPH Ploegmakers, ABT developed the engineering of this project into an implementation design.
