Introduction

My name is Maarten Huisman, senior consultant at ABT. I have extensive experience in remodelling and new construction of academic and general hospitals. This is where I like to make a difference. The challenge is to provide complex projects, processes and questions with clear solutions. Collaboration with all relevant disciplines is central to my approach, from tender phase through the use and management phase. We build together, each of us from their own function. My open and honest attitude with respect for people is always central to my work.

What do I do at ABT

I have been with ABT since 2007. Very soon I made the move to be a construction manager in the healthcare industry. The high level of social responsibility in health care is what makes my work special. In the healthcare sector, attention is increasingly focussed on people. This is true for patients as well as medical professionals. I feel enthusiastic about being a member of the design and construction team that will build great healthy environments. I am happy to make a contribution.

My dream for the future

Several of Oosterhoff’s operating companies are working on new hospitals and hospitals to be renovated. For this development to continue, we cannot stop at bricks and mortar. In the coming years, we will have to implement our new vision for the care sector of the future. Now is the moment that we can decide together what tomorrow’s hospital should look like. We know that in the coming years the pressure on care will increase. More vulnerable patients with complex care needs, pressure on finances and tight labour markets are major challenges. However, these developments also have their opportunities. New treatment options and digitization will lead to care innovations. During the corona period, we have experienced how patients, physicians and other healthcare workers were able to respond quickly. It is important for hospitals to be agile when the situation calls for it. Healthcare will want to reinforce this flexibility in the coming years.

The new building, which will open in 2026, facilitates healthcare innovation and is more compact, flexible, and sustainable. ABT is involved in many areas as an advisor: in geotechnics, structures, project management, building physics and acoustics, and coordination of monitoring.

Renovation Ca-building Erasmus Medisch Centrum

Renovation Ca-building Erasmus Medisch Centrum

The renovation of the Ca-building was complex in several ways: due to the existing infrastructure, the phased renovation where the building remained partially in use 24/7, and its constrained location. ABT was involved as a technical designer from the design phase through specifications and tendering. Additionally, we played the role of construction manager and principal supervisor from execution preparation to completion and aftercare.

Erasmus Medisch Centrum

Erasmus Medisch Centrum

For more than 8 years, extensive efforts have been made on the new state-of-the-art university hospital with an area of 207,000 m². On the site of the existing hospital, a completely new Erasmus MC has been realized where care, research, and education come together. ABT worked as the technical designer on behalf of EGM architects bv and was responsible for construction management.
