Introduction
At Technical University Eindhoven, I graduated as a structural designer and an architect. To me this is a fascinating combination. The best projects for me, are those where architecture and construction reinforce each other. Challenging each other, going into each other. Construction becomes architecture and architecture becomes construction.
What I do at ABT
I am now an associate partner and work as a consultant and structural designer for projects. I have gained extensive experience in a wide range of ambitious projects. They vary in size and many different types of construction materials.
In addition to my work at ABT, I teach structural design at Artez, the academy of architecture in Arnhem and I am secretary on the board of Booosting, the innovation platform.
My dream for the future
To me, construction is more than just keeping up buildings and doing the math. I always want to understand what was on the minds of architect and client. My educational background provided me with skills to transform their ideas into good designs. Translating seemingly complex ideas into something ingeniously simple is a challenge I like to take up. I’ve always found it thrilling to watch designs growing on paper. Working on it together with the team. And then actually seeing it realized and walking in it.
In order to move from energy-neutral to environmentally neutral buildings, the focus is increasingly shifting to the use of materials and minimizing the environmental impact of these materials. We must design smart buildings by using fewer raw materials, by being more aware and design buildings in line with their desired lifespan. And by more and better reuse of existing buildings or building components or building materials. Since about 60% of the total building material consists of the supporting structure, its contribution is substantial. My future dream is to work on buildings that leave no footprint. Zero impact.
