Green building in a green environment
FaulknerBrowns Architects designed a unique and sustainable complex of 200×150 meters on behalf of the municipality of The Hague. ABT assisted the English architects from the design phase and was responsible for the architectural design coordination and development through to realization. ABT also designed the main load-bearing structure and was responsible for the geotechnical design.
Efficient construction
The building mainly consists of three different zones, brought together under one roof of over 20,000 m². The roof rises from the main entrance to a maximum height of 25 meters, making the building fit well into the park environment. The roof is finished with moss-sedum and about 5,000 m² of solar panels and solar collectors. Together with a thermal energy storage system and numerous heat, water, and energy-saving measures, the sports complex will be CO2-neutral.
ABT designed an efficient construction based on trusses for the large spans. By optimizing the shape of the trusses, the amount of steel in the roof was further reduced.
Stunning facade
The facade of the building consists of black prefabricated concrete panels with a vertical relief from ground level. The ribbon literally makes the facade shine: 11,000 seemingly unique diamonds (a rhombus shape) of red-etched stainless steel with varying overhangs and inclinations give the building a dynamic appearance. To make the curved facade with variable height and outer dimensions possible, ABT used a parametric model.
Tekla BIM Award and multiple nominations
The Sportcampus Zuiderpark project has won both the Tekla BIM Award in the Special Attention category with the construction model and the Tekla Global BIM Award. The jury report indicated that collaboration and efficient use of information were decisive. Sportcampus Zuiderpark was also nominated in 2018 for the BNA Best Building of the Year and the National Steel Award in the Utility Building category.
