Durable floors

The concrete floor is a crucial part of a building. Especially when it comes to large areas as in storage or distribution centres. The floor largely determines the environmental impact of the structure. The same goes for the pile foundation which is not visible. They offer great opportunities for savings, both in terms of environmental impact and cost. Why not make use of ABT’s high-level flooring expertise for customized advice, from structural design to materials technology and from execution to maintenance.

Duurzame vloer Minimaliseren footprint

The design phase is the first and most impactful stage. What are the opportunities for saving material within the given task? Our structural and geotechnical specialists work closely together, exploring and testing possibilities for the best possible design. Examples of proven results with this approach include:

  • Carrying out (test) pre-loads that allow floors to be founded on steel and omit the pile foundation.
  • Combining an optimal pile plan with an optimal floor design, minimizing the amount of material used for the floor and foundation.
  • Reuse of existing piles in repurposing projects.
  • Integrating structural and temporary underwater concrete floors. This will provide thinner floors as well as reducing the chance of any leakage.

Innovations

In addition to savings in design, innovations can also reduce environmental impact. We have achieved successful results with the use of admixtures and with alternative concrete mix compositions for shrinkage reduction, self-healing, alkaline activation or material reuse for the sake of circularity. ABT also specializes in the application of alternative reinforcement methods, such as steel fibres, or more recently, basalt fibre reinforcement. Quality flooring pays off

Last but not least, there is the high quality that is important in design and during construction. Good construction and quality of a floor will lead to relatively low maintenance, longer life and low maintenance costs. Why not contact us to perform a structural assessment of existing floors for reuse or other application.

Concrete innovations at Prologis warehouses

Concrete innovations at Prologis warehouses

To drastically reduce the environmental impact of buildings, innovation in concrete is essential. At the Prologis warehouses in Tilburg and Waalwijk, ABT has been involved as a concrete specialist, and we have realized high-quality floors incorporating sustainable concrete innovations. Currently, we are preparing projects for Prologis that involve shrinkage-reducing technology and geopolymer concrete.

Nationaal Militair Museum

Nationaal Militair Museum

On the site of the former Soesterberg Air Base, the National Military Museum opened in 2014. The museum houses collections from the Army Museum in Delft and the Military Aviation Museum in Soesterberg. Commissioned by Heijmans, Felix Claus Dick van Wageningen Architects designed a museum with an exceptionally large roof area. ABT designed, among other things, the steel structure of the roof.

Renovation Museum Arnhem

Renovation Museum Arnhem

Museum Arnhem temporarily closed its doors in 2017 for a large-scale renovation. The museum was partially demolished, partially renovated and new construction took place. The new building involved one above-ground level and two underground levels (three in total). ABT provided the implementation design for the museum's structure and foundation.

World Trade Center Utrecht

World Trade Center Utrecht

With the completion of the new World Trade Center (WTC), the skyline of Utrecht has been further expanded. A large-scale redevelopment of the station area created space for a WTC at the renewed Jaarbeursplein, right next to Utrecht Central Station. ABT was involved as a structural engineer in this showpiece in the heart of the city.
